Story Board For Preliminary Task

Before we went out to start recording our Preliminary Task we drew up a storyboard which roughly states what will be recorded, what type of shots will be used, the duration of these shots and finally what dialogue or sound will be used. Before taking on any project it is crucial to plan step by step instead of just going straight at it because this could lead you into problems and also take up most of your time trying to sort out the problems. It also makes it clear exactly what needs to be done, if you have thought everything through there will be no problems once you start filming.

HERE ARE THE DRAWN STORYBOARDS:

Images Of Location Recording For Preliminary Task

This image shows you where we have decided to record our preliminary task, we have chosen to record in this building because in the area where we will be filming the building has no windows, which makes the corridors look dark and gloomy, apart from the last scene where there is a door which lets in alot of light.

This is the corridor which osaama will come to once he has entered the building, I will be standing on the other side of the doors, to start recording him as he starts to open the door whilst he is on the phone to his boss.

This is where he will walk once he has come through the doors, I will be on the right hand side, where I will do a medium close up tracking shot of him talking to his phone as he walks towards the doors, where Balawal will be waiting for to him and open the door.

As Osaama walks towards the door, I will cut and start filming from here, here Blawal will be waiting for him and as Osaama comes in sight he will open the door to let him in.

Once Osaama has come past the doors, Blawal and Osaama will start talking again I will record a tracking shot of these two talking up up to as soon as they reach the final point where they will exchange dialouge and hand Osaama will hand over the Bag with the goods.

This is the final location where the hand over of the bag will take place once the two character have switched dialouge, once the bag has been handed over, Blawal will walk towards the camera where as Osaama will leave in a diffrent direction which is going through the doors.

Hermeneutic and Proairetic Codes Essay

Hermeneutic and Proairetic codes are two elements which on a regular basis get applied to movies so the audience gets caught in and keeps watching. Hermeneutic codes arises a question for the audience normally at the beggining of a movie, which gets them to start thinking all sorts of questions to do with the scene which they have just seen, these questions for example could be what is going on, why has the chracter decieded to take that desicion along them lines, this also keeps the audience at the edge of their seat untill they eventually find out the answers to their questions. On the other hand Proairetic code is an action which is being made by a character, which does not directly raise any questions a good example would be a man walking down a street and a tile falls of a room of a house.

Both Hermeneutic and Proairetic codes have been used in the 2010 film called "Watch The Crazies" which I will now go on and explain. As soon as the film begins the audience first gets to see a house which is on fire, the camera then cuts to another angle of the house which again shows it is on fire, then cuts again to a scene where there is a car in the middle of the street, then another quick cut of an establashing shot of a long street which is on fire again including cars and shouses, with no sign of a single person, straight away the Hermeneutic code has been used and the audience at this point started to ask themselves questions like why is the house on fire, how did the fire start off and where is every one.

After the street has been shown their is a fade to black with text which appears saying "two days earlier", then the camera shows long shot of a country yards, with a tractor, then a man on a mini tractor, then a cut to a extreme close up of a badge which is a pierce county sheriff badge, again Hermenetuic code which raises question what has a sheriff got to do with the fire which will set of in two days, this code is then followed by the Proairtec code showing him driving maybe back to his neighbourhood so maybe hes been on a job, then the audience gets to see the people who live in the neighbourhood doing their day to day things which again is another method of Proairtec code.

From the two minutes of the opening film scenes the movie has already covered a lot about the film and the audience have raised their questions. This shows that it is important to apply these codes to get the audience involved and keep them interested all the way through untill the end.

Research Thriller/Horror Movie: When Night Falls

Here is another essay of a film called When Night Falls which is the same genre as our 2 minute sequences.

As the movie begins the screen is balck yet their is a non diegetic sound effect of sort of a howling which adds the mysterious spooky effecft all ready to the movie. Then after two seconds white writing waves in like a ghost which are the credits, already this has set the genre for the film due to the effects used which relate to Thriller and Horror. The first scene is the camera with a long shot looking up at the trees, by looking at the sky the audience can tell it is about to get dark again their is non diegetic sound in the background with emphasises on the horror effect of spookiness. As the movie goes on it already has raised questions for the audience because the camera cuts from one tree to another, a few seconds later it fades to black with credits again but this time when it goes back to the movie there is a quick blink effect which the audience hardly gets to see anything, this method allows to keeo the suspense up and keeps the audience at the edge of their seats.

After the credits are over the camera cuts to a close up of a newspaper revealing a photo of a women with a heading "Asteron Nurse Found Strangled", this is a typical Thriller/Horror scene as in many films related to this genre a lot of murders, killing and mysterious actions take place. Whilst the newpaper is being shown their still is non diegetic sound in the background which is building up tension. The sound is a high pitch but is being played at a slow steady tempo, this adds that extra bit of thought to the film and makes the audience wonder first the trees and now this murder case. When you think the movie is about to begin the camera cuts to the trees and the sky then back to credits then back to a newpaper this time revealing another nurse who has been murdered, with a small header underneath saying killer still on the loose, at this point the audience is really thinking what is going on because this is the second nurse who has been murdered but why a nurse. The credits and showing the tree shots keep on going untill 3minutes and 40 seconds untill the camera cuts to a hospital where a nurse is sitting down, at her desk working.

Here we are introuduced to one nurse who is sitting down working whilst having a cup of tea. Whilst she is at her desk the colour palette is very dark and gloomy which again represents Thriller/Horror. While she is sitting down the high pitch slow tempo non diegetic sound is there but when she hears a noise is beings to get abit faster, which build suspense in what is going to happen next, as she walks there is a tracking shot of her then a point of view shot of her looking down the corridor, again the colour palette is dark and as you can see even the door at the end of the corridor is dark aswell which put togother emphasis on the genre and build up tension, as the audience now is worried for this nurse who is firstly a women and has been represented as soft, calm and terrified as you can see she is walking very slowly down the corridor. Then suddenly a hand reaches out to grab her and pulls her in.

The openeing leaves a question of why is someone going around killing nurses, what is the reason behind it and finally who is it.

Research In Thriller/Horror movie: Paranormal Activity

In Paranormal Activity trailer, the viewer gets the chance to capture a little glimpse of the movie to see what it is about, who the main characters are and what the story line possibly could be. In this 1 minute 45 seconds trailer the audience gets to the see the audience in the actual cinema watching this movie on the big screen and clips from the actual movie. In actual short clips from the movie show that there is a ghost in the house where these two people are living and weird activities are taken place involving ghosts which humans are not able to see, the viewer also gets the chance to see reactions of the audience in the cinema, proving that this is a horrifying movie to watch and you will also end up gritting your teeth and will be at the edge of your seat.

The audience is introduced to two characters which are couples living on their own in a house. These characters are constructed very casually like a normal couple who do exactly what everyone else do from day to day, the audience is positioned in their point of view showing their experience and letting the audience experience it with them. But at the beginning the audience are placed in two different shoes, first the males shoes because he thinks that there is nothing dodgy going on and thinks his girlfriend is being weird, the female characters shoes who thinks that there is something going on and weird activities are taken place during the night around the house which they arte unable to figure out.

In this sequence the audience gets to see that this film has been set around a house, but has been pin pointed in certain rooms certain areas of the house to reveal the weird activities, which are taking place during the night. The camera shots used in this sequence are first a medium shot of the female who is the first main character which the audience gets to see then a cut to the male character, second shot used is a tracking shot/point of view shot showing the male character placing the camera on his tripod, then a cut has been used to show the view from the camera on the tripod showing the room, here al long shot has been shot revealing the setting of this scene. Another shot used is point of view shot looking at the house before the characters go to bed and then when they wake up during the night, to see that there are footsteps on the floor, after that a close upshot reveals the back of one the characters to show a massive bruise on their back.

The editing used are fast cuts, fades, fast wipes, long take. All these editing techniques put together add more of an effect of spookiness and horror for the audience to experience and make them go and watch the film to see what the rest of the film has packed for them. Another technique, which adds more detail and realism to the trailer, is the sound, in this trailer the sound of footsteps also known as ambient sound has been amplified, this shows how quiet the place is and that you are able to hear the smallest sound. An eerie sound like winds blowing is used diegetic sound this is a signature sound for horror movies which makes the audience expect something scary is about to happen. A sound bridge has been used to carry the non-diegetic eerie, scary sound going on as soon as something scary or weird is shown which will make the audience move, the tempo of the sound increases and the pitch parallel gets higher.

Throughout this trailer no credits have been shown but writing has appeared explaining how this film is the scariest movie made and horrifying then the name of the actual movie, the letterings are white with a black background and are quite large so it is readable also they are placed in the middle of the screen.

Two Minute Opening Sequence !

My Partner and I sat down and discussed our two minute introduction to a film. We came up with a lot of ideas and reflected some ideas on the movies we liked such as, the fast and furious 1, 2, 3 and 4, this was mainly my idea because I am a petrol head and love my cars also I personally think that the fast and furious 4 is the best movie made, where as others would disagree like my partner Blawal, he thought that paranormal activity, godfather and scarface will always be on the top of the list. After much thought about what genre we would base our movie on and depending on the genre if we could make a realistic two minute opening, we chose to base our project of creating a 2 minute introduction on a film genre of Thriller/Horror because, firstly this is the type of genre we both agreed on suited us best, its a genre which we both enjoy also we think we will be able to apply the four technical codes which are camera, editing, mesce-en-scene and sound to produce an outstanding piece of work.
