Hermeneutic and Proairetic Codes Essay

Hermeneutic and Proairetic codes are two elements which on a regular basis get applied to movies so the audience gets caught in and keeps watching. Hermeneutic codes arises a question for the audience normally at the beggining of a movie, which gets them to start thinking all sorts of questions to do with the scene which they have just seen, these questions for example could be what is going on, why has the chracter decieded to take that desicion along them lines, this also keeps the audience at the edge of their seat untill they eventually find out the answers to their questions. On the other hand Proairetic code is an action which is being made by a character, which does not directly raise any questions a good example would be a man walking down a street and a tile falls of a room of a house.

Both Hermeneutic and Proairetic codes have been used in the 2010 film called "Watch The Crazies" which I will now go on and explain. As soon as the film begins the audience first gets to see a house which is on fire, the camera then cuts to another angle of the house which again shows it is on fire, then cuts again to a scene where there is a car in the middle of the street, then another quick cut of an establashing shot of a long street which is on fire again including cars and shouses, with no sign of a single person, straight away the Hermeneutic code has been used and the audience at this point started to ask themselves questions like why is the house on fire, how did the fire start off and where is every one.

After the street has been shown their is a fade to black with text which appears saying "two days earlier", then the camera shows long shot of a country yards, with a tractor, then a man on a mini tractor, then a cut to a extreme close up of a badge which is a pierce county sheriff badge, again Hermenetuic code which raises question what has a sheriff got to do with the fire which will set of in two days, this code is then followed by the Proairtec code showing him driving maybe back to his neighbourhood so maybe hes been on a job, then the audience gets to see the people who live in the neighbourhood doing their day to day things which again is another method of Proairtec code.

From the two minutes of the opening film scenes the movie has already covered a lot about the film and the audience have raised their questions. This shows that it is important to apply these codes to get the audience involved and keep them interested all the way through untill the end.
